From Campiglia Soana to Grangia Barmaion

Soana Valley

A pleasant route which climbs the course of the Campiglia River. On returning, in the vicinity of Alpe Azaria and where in spring you can see one of the greatest concentrations of alpine chamois in the entire park, you can follow a parallel path which goes from the Cappella del Sacro Cuore di Gesù (Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) to the vicinity of Grangia Rondonero. There are two culture stops, one at Azaria with the reserve dedicated to Rigoni Stern who fell in love with this tableland, and one at Campiglia Soana with the L’uomo e i coltivi (Man and Crops) Visitor Centre where you can learn something about the role of man in the relationship with the natural environment.

From Piamprato to the Grangia Ciavanassa

An MTB route which climbs gently from the village of Piamprato to Pratorotondo where the more audacious can also do some downhill. For those who wish to continue, the route takes you to Ciavanassa with a scenic lookout point over the glacial basin of Piamprato.

The Ingria ring route

A mixed route of paved roads and dirt tracks which are quite demanding with their considerable gradients. It is advisable to follow the route in the clockwise direction. From the MTB rental (Pont Viej Bar Restaurant) the ring route passes by the flowery chief town of Ingria and its many typical abandoned villages. A route through chestnut woods, votive columns and booths and the villages with their typical tower houses built on particularly steep slopes.

From Alpette to Campiglia Soana

The route consists entirely of paved roads. Make sure you have lights for passing through a number of tunnels. It is a long route starting from Alpette, with stretches of moderate gradient and a beautiful view of the  Valle Orco, which connects two slopes and passes through many villages. The Val Soana, which is very narrow on account of its river origin, is covered with lush vegetation and typical broadleaf woodland consisting mainly of chestnut trees which gradually give way to beeches further down. Before setting off again, at Campiglia you can learn something about the role of man in the relationship with the natural environment at the L’uomo e i coltivi (Man and Crops) Visitor Centre.

From Valprato Soana to Piamprato

The route, which is entirely paved, has a fairly difficult climb which leads to the Piamprato basin where, as in all villages of the Valsoanine area, you can still hear people speaking the Franco-Provençal dialect, and during festivities you can come across people wearing traditional costume. Far from the noise of the city and with an increasing vocation for sports, Piamprato offers, climbing, gymnastic routes and for those who like thrills it is possible to reach the ski-lifts of the downhill tracks.

[collapse title=Position]The tavern Aquila Bianca is placed at the beginning of Piamprato hamlet, around 6 km from Valprato Soana Municipality, driving along the SP 48.

From the roundabout, shortly before the tavern, an accessible path begins, it goes along the river that links the south and the north side of the hamlet without walking from the village centre, that sometimes can be not suitable.[/collapse]

Pian dell'Azaria - Grange Barmaion

Leave the car in the Piazzale Campiglia Soana, take the dirt road that leads to Pian of Azaria. The route has only some climb to reach the broad plateau of the basin at the bottow of the rocky ridges of Rancio. A typical alpine forest mixed of deciduous and coniferous accompanied along the way to end in Gr. Barmaion only with beautiful specimens of spruce and larch trees. Beyond the pasture, the forest gives way to the alpine meadow, rich in colorful blooms frequented by important species of butterflies and other alpine insects.

The picturesque village of Piamprato, in the homonym Valley going up from Valprato Soana, offers numerous walks, more or less difficult, starting mostly crossing the village. We proceed along the wide track to reach the broad and beautiful plateaus above populated by marmots and grazing herds, next to Grange Prariond. For climbing lovers it's possible to reach the rocky plateau on the left orographic side of the valley, before entering in the village.

Once you leave the car in the confortable square of Campiglia Soana, take the clear dirt road that leads to the Pian dell'Azaria. The path, simple and undemanding, presents only a few climb needed to reach the broad plateau of the basin, at the foot of the rocky ridges of Rancio. A typical deciduous forest mixes with conifers to then show only beautiful specimens of spruce and larch forests up to Barmaion. In addition to the alpine pasture, the forest gives way to the alpine meadow covered with snow, on which it's easy to sight quiet chamois grazing.

You cannot visit the Val Soana in winter without having gone to Boschietto and Boschiettiera: high-altitude villages dominated by the elegant Tower pyramid Lavina from its 3308m. A walk with snowshoes to enter into the magic of forest along snow-covered trails. The two villages are situated on the edge of an alpine pasture, which is reached by a leisurely walk along the mule-track that crosses an old forest rich both in conifers and broadleaf.
